Partner in Health's Program Management Guide discusses strategies to help organizations implement a CHW program to improve access as well as the quality of care that is provided in resource-limited areas. A CHW program can significantly improve health outcomes, particularly for the poorest members of the community. In PIH's accompaniment model of care, patients build a trusting relationship with one CHW who will remain with them until healthy.
This manual introduces the importance of the community health worker's role in the communities they serve. It also includes course materials for CHWs on the following topics: how to identify signs of illness in a sick child, age 2 months up to 5 years; when to refer children to health facilities for more care; and how families can treat children at home with problems of diarrhea, malaria or fast breathing. The manual provides many exercises in order to facilitate CHW practice.
This case study examines lay health worker attrition by examining three questions: What is the magnitude of attrition in programs? What are the determinants of attrition? What are the most successful ways of reducing attrition? Several important factors have been identified including: supportive supervision, defined roles with specific tasks, locally relevant incentives, incentive systems combining monetary and nonmonetary benefits, recognition, training opportunities, community and policy support, and strong leadership.
This report documents how CHWs address the problems of health disparities, poor access to care, and the rising cost of health care. Challenges that exist in expanding current CHW programs are also examined. Policy options around finance, workforce, and delivery of care are also discussed.
The Community Leadership Development Programs is a training designed for rural leaders to help them understand the processes that contribute to better healthcare management and the steps to build effective teamwork. The program creates support and buy-in for health programs and infrastructure development through a series of workshops that focus on: visioning, health and education, leadership and planning, conflict resolution and forgiveness, and respect.
This three-year mulitcountry study was undertaken with the objective of determining the extent to which the community directed approach could effectively provide integrated delivery of other health interventions. CDI achieved significantly higher coverage than currently used delivery approaches for all interventions except DOTS.
