Tools for conducting In service training needs assessments for CHWs

I am looking for tools to adapt for conducting a training needs assessment of CHWs in Nigeria and also tools to assess feasibility and sustainability of training methods for CHWs. Trying to provide a body of evidence to influence policy and CPD re-licensure methods for CHWs. Would be glad to get resources from colleagues.

Community Health Worker Assessment and Improvement Matrix (CHW AIM): Updated Program Functionality Matrix for Optimizing Community Health Programs

To support quality CHW program design and implementation, USAID, UNICEF, the Community Health Impact Coalition, and Initiatives Inc. have updated and adapted the Community Health Worker Assessment and Improvement Matrix (CHW AIM) Program Functionality Matrix tool. This tool can be applied at district, regional, and national levels to identify and close gaps in design and implementation and, ultimately, enhance program performance.

The Community Health Systems (CHS) Catalog

The Community Health Systems (CHS) Catalog is a one-stop ‘shop’ for information on community health policies and programs across 25 countries, including extensive information on CHWs. Developed in 2014 and updated in 2017, it provides policymakers, program managers, researchers and donors with policy data to advance community health research, programming, and advocacy efforts. The CHS Catalog includes 25 country profiles, a set of infographics, and a summary of cross-country policy and program trends.

Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO): a new model for community health worker training and support

This article describes a distance learning approach for CHWs using the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) model™, which is a video-conferencing-based mentorship model. The authors describe the ECHO model for CHW training and mentoring using case examples and pre/post-surveys from an obesity prevention and addiction recovery program. They conclude that the ECHO model has advantages over traditional training methods for CHWs and can be adapted to other countries. 

Ongoing training of community health workers in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic scoping review of the literature

This literature review examines the training of community health workers in low-income and middle-income counties with special attention to detailing current delivery implementation and evaluation of training provision.

This study protocol outlines the type 2 hybrid effectiveness-implementation study that was used to test an integrated maternal and child health intervention based in the community health worker system in rural Nepal.
